“The appearance and flavor of everything he grows is beyond compare. We have visited his farm and been enlightened about his farming philosophy and techniques, which seem to be the reason he is able to grow such high quality, nutritious, flavorful produce. On top of all this, he is one of the most engaging and fun people you will ever meet. We can’t adequately express how grateful we are for Jonny and his contribution to our health and well-being and for so many others in the area.”

Your Garden Coach

Jonny Root uses his expertise as a regenerative farmer and consultant to help you design and cultivate your land in a way that actively sequesters carbon—meaning your soil draws carbon out of the atmosphere and stores it in the ground. He is excited to empower you to learn how to create a thriving, resilient landscape that supports both the environment and your community.

Jonny’s interest in growing food began at Brooklyn College while working with inner-city kids who did not know where their food came from. Jonny realized he actually didn’t know either and he became determined to learn how. He set off on a quest to study in diverse climates with the soil health restoration pioneers around the world. From the deserts of Israel’s kibbutz to the coastal farms of Gambia, he immersed himself in hands-on learning.

He went to places like Chile, where he helped to diversify a monoculture olive farm, and New Zealand, where he worked with beekeepers who were refining Manuka honey. He studied at a micro-algae farm in France, and he supported young minds on the “Sustainable Living Tour” in California. He’s learned with farmers from Kashmir to Alaska. He served as a liaison for the International Permaculture Convergence in India and the UK deepened his expertise in adapting regenerative methods to different cultural and environmental landscapes.

In 2020 Jonny put his knowledge to the test by farming a single piece of land and achieving remarkable success. Now, he’s working with growers to implement regenerative practices that build soil, sequester carbon, and produce abundant, resilient food systems. You can see the beautiful Harvest Table Farm (plus Jonny’s family!) on this PBS feature.

Jonny and his family live in eastern Tennessee where his daughter attends an earth school. He loves everything about the ocean, walking among the trees, finding all the best new music, making stinging nettle tea, practicing in yoga studios with tall ceilings, and volunteering at his daughter’s school in the gardens.

He sounds pretty cool, right?
